Thursdays | Maketewah & Glendale | 5:30 to 10:00 All levels are invited to play in our 8th Spring League. Play begins March 25 and lasts until June 3. Capacity is 80 players for this session and the deadline is March 17.
John Van Lokeren and Marie Matrka pulled off one of the season's biggest upsets, winning 6-4 against Doug Jones and Austin Hensley. The win propelled Van Lokeren to a 3-0 court record. The group had time to run through the rotation a second time. The next time Jones was 3-0 and the others 1-2. This match was played on Monday night at Indian Hill Winter Club. Hensley & Jones have played numerous pairings on other nights due to the high levels of participation this season on Thursdays. Hensley 11-5 for the WeekAustin Hensley went 11-5 in five Platform Tennis League matches this week. His best result was a 3-0 performance on a 36-rated court Tuesday night at Maketewah Country Club with Doug Jones, Brett DeCurtins and Richard Canelas. He also was undefeated on a 26-rated court on Thursday night. Ironman ReturnsMike Haehnle, winner of the last three Ironman awards for most sets in a season, played for the first time this year. Haehnle was 3-1 on a 17-rated court with Hal Theobald, Patty Nash, Lorena Lasso and Konnor Montchai. This year's Hertzel Cup "City Open Championship" will be played Saturday, February 27 at various Cincinnati clubs. All teams are guaranteed at least three matches. A tournament favor, lunch, dinner, beer, balls & prizes are also included. Most years, the draw size is 48 teams. This year may need to be limited a little to adjust for COVID, so grab a partner and sign up quickly if you intend to play. Although the general competition level for this event is considered pretty high, any PT League player with at least a 1,000 "Pairings Points" or an APTA PTI rating lower than 25.0 would probably have at least a few competitive matches.
Evan Webeler went undefeated on two 33-rated courts this week. The six wins improved his season record to 58-29 (69.9%). Think top 20 city players and a generally higher level than the top club vs. club team matches. 69 of 438 have ever been on these courts. 30-35 Court Results: These courts often include four players above the 1,600 "pairings points" level. They can have a slightly wider range if top players are included. A typical top court in the club vs. club team league would consist of a similar collection of players. 155 of 438 players have participated on courts at this level. 25-29 Court Results: Occasional participation from top players, but mostly consisting of players with between 1,100 and 1,900 "pairings points." These matchups are similar to lower court top division and upper court second division club vs. club league matches. 212 of 438 have played on courts in this range. Harrison Rogers went 4-0 on a court with David Boettcher, Cory Ingle, Mike Schray and Paul Gosiger this week. Rogers improved to 9-4 for the season.
