Schmahl has won both of his courts this season and maintains a 20.0 point average (scoring system explained). The pair played on a five player court with Lee Workum, Bob Kooris and Scott McIntosh and opted to play 5 full sets instead of the standard 6 games per rotation (allowed at later time slots). Doug Jones remained on top of the standings, winning two courts. Other court winners were Ralph Winterhalter, Greg Carr and Scott Vaaler. Bill Boughton and John Fovel split 1st/2nd place points on a five player court as well. The Platform Tennis League welcomed Todd Minnear as a first time participant. ![]() The Summer Platform Tennis League concluded it's second week and a tight race for second place formed. Fabian Schmahl holds second place alone and leads the cluster with a 20.0 point average. John Fovel, Randy Underwood and Erik Simonson follow and each average 19.0. Wednesday: Five courts were played. Doug Jones was victorious on two plus Bill Boughton, Scott Vaaler and Jack Dowling each won one court. The closest contest of the night saw Jones edge Underwood 17 games to 16 for the first place points. Thursday: Four Courts were played. Adam Kwiecinski debuted with a court victory, playing with Lance Lagaly, Chris Bartlett and Doug Jones as a "fill in." Kwiecinski also finished third on an upper level court later in the 7:30 session to end his first night with a 14.0 average. Other court winners were John Fovel, Jim Ciesick and Jones. Play continued on Thursday night with three more. Wednesday: Randy Underwood made his Platform Tennis League debut and finished first on his court. He and Erik Simonson both won upper level courts (click for an explanation of the summer league scoring system), gaining 20 points each for their efforts. Other court winners were Bret Bruder and Ryan English. Bob Kooris and Mark Pohlman tied for first on their court and a sixth court was used to introduce newcomer Bruce Frasure to the game. Steve Gates, Jamie Priest, Bruce Frasure and Randy Underwood all played in the Platform Tennis League for the first time. Thursday: Fabian Schmahl earned 20 points by winning his court with Andy Taylor, Scott Vaaler and Lee Workum. Workum earned 16 points for winning his earlier court and Bob Kooris and Glynn Goertzen shared first and second place points (14 each) by tying for first on theirs. Click for current league standings. ![]() We will again run a Cincinnati Summer "Low Bounce" Platform Tennis League. Participation will be open to adult male and female players of all levels. The first night of league play will be Wednesday, April 29. Play will be on Wednesday and Thursday nights with two start times - 6:00 and 8:00. Players will have the flexibility to choose any or all of the four weekly sessions in which they would like to participate. All play will be at the Glendale Lyceum. The format will be court-by-court round robins, where players play one set with each player assigned to their court for the evening. Players will generally be grouped by playing level. Balls, beer and an end of the season A/B tournament with pizza and drinks is included. The cost for the 8-week, 32-session season is $125 per player. --- The league's first year had 40 participants and we are hoping to grow that number for 2015. This year, participation was up from 54 players to 88. Individual sessions participated in equaled 898 for an average of 10.2 per participant. 737 official sets were played and over 1,000 total. Flight One: Fovel Finishes Season With Perfect NightJohn Fovel went 3-0 on his court with Gene Kennedy, Anthony Palmenter and Dave Montgomery. He finished the season 19-27 (41.30%) in his flight one matches and 51-37 (57.95%) overall. Thorsten Knobloch and Patrick Shiels each went 3-1 on their 5-man court as well. Flight One: Webeler Undefeated in Two SessionsEvan Webeler went 6-0 to improve his season record to 37-24 (60.66%) in flight one matches. At 6:00 Webeler won all of his sets at Wyoming Golf Club with/against Steve Rafalo, Scott Boster and Mike Herrel. He came back from 4-5 down in two of those sets. At 8:00, he moved to Glendale Lyceum and won three more with/against Brad Pierce, Michael Todd and Patrick Shiels. Bill Boughton pulled off the surprise of the night, going 3-0 on his court with Brad Pierce, Ron Visscher and Kyle Wilkins. Boughton improved to 15-17 (46.77%) in flight one matches and 34-23 (59.65%) overall. Click for full flight one results. Flight Two: Wilkins Only UnbeatenJust two courts were played in flight two as many of the players mixed in on flight one courts. Kyle Wilkins was the lone unbeaten player, going 3-0 on his court with John Van Lokeren, Andy Taylor and Greg Carr. Wilkins improved his flight two record to 58-49 (54.21%) and 62-61 (50.41%) overall. Click for full results.
