Lee Lonergan and Pat Gilligan saved a wild match point in a tiebreaker against Jonah Ebenhoeh and Dave Necessary. The point ended with a Lonergan volley that hung on top of the net for a second before trickling over. Lonergan & Gilligan came back to win the set, helping Lonergan go 3-1 on the night. Lonergan moved up to 5th place overall and is now 44-24 (64.71%) for the season. Every Point Really, Really MattersA Season With 1,500+ Sets May Be Decided By Two Saved Match Points Following the above mentioned set, a hut conversation with Dave Necessary focused on how much influence these saved/blown match point matches can have on a paddle season. It made me think about two such sets this year involving the top three players in the current standings. If two points went the other way, the top 3 would change spots:
Second place in the standings was on the line as the two through five players played each other this week. The result was the PT League equivalent of a draw as Doug Jones, Tyler Fraser and Eric Toth all went 2-1 to remain in second, third and fourth respectively. Matt Allare went 0-3 and dropped to 8th place overall. Players going undefeated on courts this week were: Eric West, Ryan English, Bob Spencer, Kate Molinsky and Sam Chasnoff. Toth has won 11 straight sets and has not lost since week #15. Rob Bakker went 3-1 and remained in first in the overall standings. Bakker had his streak snapped at 16 straight sets, losing with Eric West against Wil Lofgren and Brad Pierce. Yiran Liu climbed into the top 10 by going 4-0 on his court with Mike Schray, Drew Violette, Scott Vaaler and Lawrence Gamblin. Liu is now 23-14 (62.16%) for the season and is in ninth place in the overall standings. Ed Hallahan inched closer to .500 with a 4-0 performance against Tom Eisenzimmer, Hal Theobald, George Molinsky and Jim Friedman. Hallahan is 13-18 (41.94%) for the year. Bakker Extends Streak to 13, Closes in on First Rob Bakker went 3-0 on his court with Doug Jones, Eric West and Evan Webeler. He has now won 13 straight sets dating back to week #15. Bakker improved to 23-5 (82.14%) and is in 2nd place overall.

![]() Brian Brockhoff went 4-0 in his return to Platform Tennis League following hip replacement surgery. Brockhoff was undefeated on his court with Bobby Deye, Richard Canelas, Colin Warren and Mike Herrel. Webeler Tries First New Paddle in 9 Years Evan Webeler used a new paddle for the first time in nine years, switching from his 395g 2007 Wilson (K) Blade (still with the original grip) to a much lighter 370g Wilson Blade Smart. Unfortunately, Webeler's new paddle was not nearly as successful as Brockhoff's new hip. He went 0-3 on a court with Rob Bakker, Doug Jones and Eric Toth. In case Webeler wants to switch back, that old 2007 Wilson K thing can still be purchased new online. Met Mixed Doubles Champion Wil Lofgren Goes 7-0 Former Cincinnati Met mixed doubles champ (and 2x men's singles winner) Wil Lofgren went 7-0 on his two two courts. Lofgren improved his season record to 37-20 (64.91%) and is now in 7th place overall. In addition to Brockhoff and Lofgren, Doug Jones, John Fovel, Greg Carr and Kevin Howe all went undefeated on courts. The league welcomed newcomers George and Kate Molinsky. |
